Mary A. Zang

Mary Augusta Zang, 79, died Nov. 5, 2007, at her Silt Mesa home. She was born July 9, 1928, in rural Silt Mesa, to Joseph and Judith Zang.Mary spent much of her life helping her family, and over 20 years in Glenwood Springs with her sister, Angelina Cretti, as apartment manager and caretaker. She later moved back to her home in Silt to help care for her mother and tend to the yard and garden. Mary was an avid outdoors woman who loved to hunt and fish, and she rarely got skunked. Her other passion was vegetable gardening. She started tomato seeds indoors, transplanted the seedlings, and grew a bumper crop of vine-ripened fruit. The yield was so abundant that she sold tomatoes to local markets and shared with friends and neighbors. She followed the family tradition of helping each other and friends. Mary’s little piece of Eden was the White River Forest. For Mary, “The hills are my special place, peaceful and tranquil with groves of quakies, scrub oak, whispering spruce trees and the meadows filled with God’s wildflowers.” Mary is survived by brother Leo Zang; sisters Angelina Cretti, Emma and Jemma Zang; nephew John Cretti; great-nephews Jason, Justin, Jonathan; and great-niece Jinny Marie Cretti. At Mary’s request, there will be no funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to Roaring Fork Hospice, P.O. Box 1970, Glenwood Springs, CO 81602.
