Max Reed

Retired Master Chief Max N. Reed, U.S. Navy, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2005, at his home in Bancroft, Iowa, at the age of 80. He was born on Oct. 6, 1924, in Lohrville, Iowa.

Max was the son of Wayne and Flossie (Stout) Reed. Funeral services took place May 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Algona, Iowa. Interment with full military honors was at Cedar Cemetery in Rinard, Iowa.

Shortly after graduating from high school, Max joined the U.S. Navy and saw duty around the world during his 30-year career with a specialty in cryptology. His duty stations included Guam, Corregidor, Japan, Spain, Alaska and many other locations around the world. He retired and was honorably discharged in 1972.



He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joycelyn (Buckmaster) Reed, of Bancroft, Iowa; daughter Julie (Dick) Droessler, of Bancroft; two sons, Mark (Kelly), of Austin, Minn., and John (Julie), of Algona, Iowa; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and five brothers, Don (Diane) Reed, of Harcourt, Iowa; Joe (Claudia) Reed, of Sioux City, Iowa; Bert (Rosie) Reed, of Badger, Iowa; Jim (Kay) Reed, of New Castle; and Paul (LuAnn) Reed, of Jonesboro, Ark.

His parents preceded him in death.
