Mayor pro tem: Vote for Vanderhurst
Dear Editor,
I support Randy Vanderhurst in this Carbondale mayoral election for these reasons.
First, he runs organized, efficient meetings. Trustee meetings are much fuller and are more diversified than planning and zoning meetings. Randy keeps the trustees focused, and the fact that meetings no longer last until 1 a.m. is primarily due to his efforts.
Second, he draws out those trustees who are hesitant to speak and makes sure they have equal time with those trustees who like to talk. Especially with new trustees, he is patient and clear.
Third, there is no question about the amount of time Randy has been willing to devote to the position of mayor. Because of the many day meetings, the ribbon cuttings and presentations to groups like Rotary, Randy’s flexibility and availability is unique.
Fourth, Randy’s long-term view of the Town Board would be sorely missed in his absence. He recalls the days of River Valley Ranch approvals, early RFTA dilemmas, previous budget decisions, and prior boards’ concerns and intentions. History is a great teacher, and Randy’s perspective is invaluable.
Lastly, and most emphatically, and the last zoning code amendment public hearing notwithstanding, Randy maintains a calm and fair attitude with all who speak at Town Board meetings. His relaxed manner puts people at their ease, and he uses humor to lighten the mood if things get testy. It is unfair that all the potentially difficult meetings that Randy has successfully chaired are being forgotten in light of just one.
Looking over the long term, Randy is clearly the best candidate for mayor.
