New Castle native Alice McKennis enjoyed a successful return to World Cup competition at Lake Louise, Alberta, on Friday, posting an eighth-place downhill finish.

A knee injury wiped out most of McKennis’ 2010-11 season. The 2010 Olympian finished in 1 minute, 55.6 seconds.

“It’s been such a long road for me and to be fast in my first race back is just an incredible feeling,” McKennis said via a U.S. Ski Team press release. “I felt so much more comfortable today than I have in any of the training runs.

“I felt like I was skiing well, but I no idea that I’d come down in a decent position. I’m so pumped up for another day of downhill tomorrow.”

Fellow American Lindsey Vonn won Friday’s downhill, claiming her ninth career victory at Lake Louise.

Vonn finished in 1:53.19 to beat Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather by 1.95 seconds. Switzerland’s Dominique Gisin was third in 1:55.29.

Vonn has won at least one race at Lake Louise in eight straight years.

Another downhill is scheduled for today and a super-G is set for Sunday.
