The Roaring Fork Valley Veterans Committee will hold activities, services and ceremonies on Saturday, May 25, in Glenwood Springs and Monday, May 27, in Aspen.”Memorial Day 2002 is the first since Sept. 11 and is a day to reflect our losses and country’s sacrifices,” said spokesperson Dick Merritt.”Let us assemble in the Roaring Fork Valley to remind ourselves that freedom is both precious and costly. Those who expect to enjoy the blessings of freedom must, at times, engage in battle to protect it.”The schedule is as follows.Saturday, May 25-8 a.m. – Marines gather for an authentic SOS breakfast at the Veterans Memorial at the Garfield County Courthouse in Glenwood Springs. For more information, call Dave Dreith at 984-3773.-10:30 a.m. – A veterans 5K/10K freedom walk will take place at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs. Participants are urged to wear an article of clothing identifying their branch of service. For more information, call Dick Merritt at 927-5178.Monday, May 27-11 a.m. – A memorial service will be held at Aspen Community Church.-Noon – A ceremony will be held at the Roaring Fork Valley Living War Memorial at the Pitkin County Courthouse in Aspen.-1 p.m. – The Aspen Elks will serve barbecue to those attending the noon ceremony.-3 p.m. – A moment of remembrance will be held, and the public is encouraged to pause for one minute and silently reflect on ancestors, family members, loved ones, neighbors and friends who sacrificed and gave their lives to preserve freedoms and the American way of life.
