Juanita M. Morrow will turn 100 years old on New Year’s Day. Juanita was born in Basalt on Jan. 1, 1910, but this New Year’s Day baby also made history.Juanita was the first baby in the state of Colorado whose name was registered with the state board of health in accordance with the new regulations to have the registration of births follow the same strict manner governing the recording of deaths.Juanita still lives in the home in south Rifle that she and her husband, Jim Layne, moved into on Feb. 28, 1939. When she was born, the local paper at the time stated “Juanita said ‘Happy New Year’ to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Morrow January 1 at 2 p.m.” Her mother and father, Harry and Hattie, may have had a hard time envisioning their small infant as a centenarian. Yet, 100 years later, on Jan. 1, 2010, Juanita May Morrow Layne will celebrate her 100th birthday. There will be an open house for Juanita on Saturday, Jan. 2, at the Rifle Senior Center, from 2-4 p.m. to celebrate Juanita’s 100 years of rich history. You are welcome to join Juanita and her family to share in this special 100th birthday occasion. Juanita has seven children, 17 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren!
