Barbara and Larry Velasquez will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Feb. 18, 2010. Barbara and Larry were married in Glenwood Springs and have enjoyed living in Glenwood Springs and Battlement Mesa.Congratulations, Barb and Larry!
Glenwood Springs sophomore Caine Albrecht has been skiing moguls for three years and this year he skis for the Aspen Valley Ski Club in freestyle moguls. He has been taking the podium this month at the two most recent competitions. In the Aspen Jr Open Moguls Competition on Jan. 16 he placed ninth out of 58 boys. On Jan. 24, at the Vail Open Mogul competition, he took the podium for third place in his age group and ninth place overall out of 58 boys. Caine also is a goalkeeper on the Demons’ soccer team and has been climbing as time allows with GSHS club. Caine not only has physical talent, but he has been on the honor roll since he has been a student at GSHS.
Rifle Middle School hosted Garfield School District’s 7th/8th Grade Spelling Bee on Feb. 3. Students from Riverside and Rifle middle schools competed in two written rounds and an oral round to determine who would represent the district at the state spelling bee in Denver.Students first completed two written rounds. The written round winners were: third place, Kellie Larsen, RIV; second place, Austin Kennedy, RMS; and first place, Natalie Bustad, RMS. These three students got to compete in the oral round, along with the following RIV students: Jesse Crawford, Shayla DeYoung, India Vasquez, Colton Sickels and James Valenteen, and these RMS students: Ashton Collett, Breanda DeLoera, Sarah McCutchan and Austin Kennedy.After a great oral round, we were down to three spellers. Oral round winners were: third place, Kellie Larsen, RIV; second place, India Vasquez, RIV; and first place, Natalie Bustad, RMS. Natalie will represent our school district at the state spelling bee in Denver on March 6. Congratulations, Natalie!We would like to say a big thank-you to all the competitors and volunteers, especially Donna Bannon and Kathy Bernat, who always make the spelling bee a fun event. It is truly a pleasure to see these students support each other during competition. Thank you, Rifle Middle School, for hosting again this year.
Bookcliff Conservation District presented Don and Barbara Chaplin with a Small Acreage Award for outstanding land stewardship. Don and Barbara have a current conservation plan and are working towards improving their natural resources, including more efficient water delivery on their property. Don and Barbara have attended the Quality Living on Your Rural Land Workshop to help them better understand the soil, water, plant and animal relationship. They also participate in other district programs and are active in the conservation community. They currently are taking the Master Gardeners class to continue their education on natural resources.Bookcliff Conservation District would like to commend Don and Barbara for their continuing conservation efforts.
Carol A. Kreimier, a junior from Rifle, was among the 710 students named to the Gonzaga University dean’s list for fall semester 2009. Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.69 grade-point average to be listed.Gonzaga is located in Spokane, Wash.
