On Sunday, Aug. 7, 49 members of the Roaring Fork Women’s Triathlon Team traveled to Denver to join 3,000 women at the Tri for the Cure at Cherry Creek Reservoir. The triathlon consisted of a 1⁄2 mile open water swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. The triathlon is a cancer fundraiser for the Denver Susan G. Komen Foundation. The team trained together from May to August to learn the skills of swimming, biking and run/walking. Members live from Marble to Silt and range in age from 17 – 67. This year’s team consisted of six mother-daughter participants, six cancer survivors, 17 first-time triathletes, two relay teams, and seven assistant coaches. For the first time, the Western Slope team had three podium finishes with USAT Coach Nancy Reinisch winning the 55-59 age group, Assistant Coach Carol McCurry winning the 60-64 age group, and member Carla Westerman placing second in the 45-49 age group. For the 12th year in a row the team boasted a 100 percent completion rate with every member crossing the finish line. The team is coached by founders Judy Haynes and Reinisch.

The parents of Courtney Ann Vasten and Blake Morgan are pleased to announce their engagement.Courtney is a 2007 Rifle High School graduate and is currently a student at Colorado Mountain College. Her parents are Duane Vasten of Basalt and Wendy Marshall of Huntington, Utah.Blake is a 2004 graduate of Desiderata School who currently works for Kuersten Construction. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Klaus Minter of Rifle.An Oct. 1 wedding is planned. The couple plans to reside in Rifle.
