Patrick McCarty, longtime Agriculture, Natural Resources and Horticulture extension agent with Colorado State University Extension in Garfield County, recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agriculture Agents. The award was presented Aug. 11 at the association’s annual Professional Improvement Conference and Annual Meetings in Overland Park, Kan. Emphasis areas for McCarty have included Pasture and Grazing Management, Beef Cattle Production, Master Gardener and Home and Business Horticulture, and Small Acreage Management. Patrick has also served on numerous state and regional Extension teams. His service to NACAA has included western co-chair of the Horticulture and Scholarship committees.

Bookcliff Conservation helped Charles and Angela Ryden host Farm Day for local sixth-graders. Grand Valley Middle School attended on Sept. 13 with 82 students and Ross Montessori School attended with 20 students. They enjoyed rotating between educational stations including the soils pit, water trailer, various games and the favorite, the corn maze. Because of tight school budgets, the activity fee was donated by Chelewski Pipe and Supply, Farm Bureau, and Bookcliff, South Side and Mount Sopris Conservation Districts. New Castle fifth-graders are scheduled for Sept. 23. To join in the fun call the Angela Ryden at 984-2190.

Pvt. Colby Arbar graduated Army Basic Training on July 21, 2011, from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and AIT training on Sept. 1, 2011, from Fort Sill, Okla. He is now continuing his training at his duty station in Fort Carson. Colby is the son of Joshua Arbar and Shauna Ross and the grandson of Shirley Locke and Ross Roginski.

Buddy Training has paid off with 20 inches and 27 pounds lost. “Keep up the hard work ladies,” says Steve Wells, personal trainer.
