Local high school students pose for a photo with Bruce Gordon of EcoFlight, after completing an overflight of the Roaring Fork watershed. The flights took place prior to a seminar at Aspen High School on Water Conservation Concerns in the Upper Colorado River Basin. High school students from throughout the valley attended the seminar, which marked the culmination of EcoFlight’s weeklong Flight Across America student program.
The Racing Mule Golf Association held its season ending banquet at Aspen Glen on Oct. 12. A total of $21,803 was granted to 10 local charities. This figure boosted Racing Mule total donations to $100,185 since the organization’s inception. Racing Mules is an organization of 80 area businessmen and professionals who get together once each month between April and October for a tournament at various area golf courses. Competitions at each of these tournaments are utilized to generate and accumulate funds, which are then given to a variety of local charities at a year-ending banquet. Racing Mules was founded by an initial group of nine local golfers who not only loved golf, but realized their golf skills may be limited and even with a lot of instruction and work not all golfers can be a thoroughbred, but with a little effort all golfers can be a racing mule. Consequently, the organization was formed to foster their love of golf, facilitate friendly competition and as a significant side benefit raise money for needy local charities. Racing Mules has grown from this initial group of nine and $1,760 in donations in 2002 to 80 members and $21, 803 in donations in 2012. The charity recipients in 2012 were Shining Stars, LIFT-UP, YouthZone, MDA, Roaring Fork School District girls golf team, Boy Scouts, GSHS Breakfast Group, Wind Walkers, River Bridge and Tom’s Door.
