Memories & Milestones
Dalby, Wendland & Co. P.C. has announced that Glenwood Springs icons the Floyd and Lavonne Diemoz family was among the 2013 winners of its “Spirit of Western Colorado” awards. They were given a bronze eagle statue and were honored at a ceremony on Nov. 2. Floyd is the son of Italian immigrants who settled in the valley in 1906 from the Aosta Valley in northern Italy. His father, Adolph Diemoz, was a legendary figure. He was a cowboy, a politician, and founder of Diemoz Construction, the business Floyd now runs with his son, John. Floyd was born in Glenwood Springs in 1937. Over a span of 40 years, Floyd Diemoz has been a key player in some of the most prominent projects in and around Glenwood Springs, including the renovations of the Frontier Historical Society museum building (which now houses YouthZone), the Hot Springs Lodge & Pool, the old American Legion Hall building, and expansion of the Hotel Denver at the site of Glenwood’s historic Rex Hotel. As Floyd completed this renovation work, he demonstrated a respect for local history that was unparalleled, and though he has preserved many important pieces of Glenwood’s history, he is largely credited for saving Glenwood Canyon from being sacrificed for the sake of an interstate highway.
Cadette Girl Scout Troop 269 took the Hotel Colorado Tour. This was a wonderful tour behind the scenes and history of the hotel. The girls are posing on the Balcony of the Molly Brown Room with Glenwood Springs in the background. We would like to thank our tour guide, Suzy Alcott, for all her stories and enthusiasm doing the tour.
The town of New Castle came out in force this year, and donated a record of more than 3,000 pounds of food for LIFT-UP in one day. Pack 221 Scouts and their parents really had a great time harvesting the bounty. We live in such a caring community. Thanks to all of our Scouts, parents, A-1 Traffic Control and the community for making it special. John and Dustin Harcourt, New Castle Cub Scouts, Pack 221
