Midland closed Wednesday

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” City workers plan to close Midland Avenue briefly after Wednesday morning’s rush hour to remove snow and ice, but residents along the street will still be allowed through.

“We’re taking all the ice and snow out of the gutter all along Midland,” said Tom Morelli, an equipment operator with Glenwood’s streets department. “We’re planning on just pulling it across the street and stacking it up on the other side, pushing it out of the way.”

Work will begin around 9 to 9:30 a.m. after morning traffic dies down. Morelli said there were some minor drainage issues and the work will be done mostly as a preventative measure.

“We really haven’t had any real major issues out along Midland,” he said. “It’s just more or less prevention and trying to clean up the streets. There for a while it was starting to get a little bit narrow.”

The work might not happen Wednesday if weather turns sour. The snow and ice removal can be done quicker and more easily if the road is closed, Morelli said. The city will use a couple of loaders and a motor grader.

Signs have been put up on Midland Avenue warning drivers of the closure. Recent melting snow has reduced the amount that will have to be removed.

“If it keeps melting like it is we may not have that much to do in there,” he said.
