Military spending not causing starvation

Russell Coletti
Glenwood Springs

Dear Editor,

In response to Sue Gray’s letter of Aug. 5. Ms. Gray was again spouting off about one of our country’s great leaders, Colin Powell. In her letter, she quoted statistics of our current homeless population along with our percentage of hungry mothers and children living on the streets of America.

Where in the world did she come up with those figures? Mountain Folks for Global Justice files, perhaps? That name always makes me chuckle, sorry. It conjures up a bunch of hairy, rag-covered mountain men running down Mount Sopris with pitchforks and burning cow chip torches in their hands, screaming at the top of their lungs.

Anyhow, back to Ms. Gray. I have traveled all over our great country and have witnessed the inner city plights of Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and New York, and for the life of me have not seen one of these cities overrun with mothers and children digging through garbage cans because of our defense bill.

Folks, our weapons program is not preventing anyone from getting a job and providing food for themselves and their families. Nor is it putting helpless mothers and children at risk of starvation on our cities’ streets.

Ms. Gray is an angry, misinformed liberal who has a bone to pick with anything or anybody who doesn’t resemble an anarchist.

Has anyone checked the water in Carbondale lately?

Sincerely,

Russell Coletti
