Mill levy override a small sacrifice

Mark MacHale

Dear Editor,

As a school principal for eight years, I could fill every page in this newspaper with technical, statistical and historical information about the proposed Re-2 mill levy override. It would take thousands of words to explain how school finance works (or in our case, doesn’t work).

I could argue with folks that don’t want higher taxes (who does?), or I could take Mr. Talbott to task for suggesting my Constitutional rights be limited because he doesn’t think it fair that teachers can vote. It is helpful to know that the schools won’t receive one additional dime from the new gas wells or Wal-Mart taxes, unless we pass a mill levy override.

Let me tell you your schools and your kids need some financial help. We are asking for literally pennies a day so we can keep qualified staff, keep class sizes reasonable and continue to offer quality programs.

You may not support all the items offered under the proposal, but please get the facts before you decide how to vote.

When my parent’s generation was asked to sacrifice for the good of the country or community, they responded with dedication and devotion.

We are asking for a very small sacrifice to help a talented and dedicated group of educators continue to provide you with quality schools. If we are trusted to teach and help care for the young people of this valley, then please give us the resources to do it right. The future is in your hands.

Sincerely,

Mark MacHale
