SUMMIT COUNTY ” Rescue workers found the body of missing hiker on Quandary

Peak shortly after 1 p.m. today. The 31-year-old man from Missouri was dead

when rescuers found him; he had been missing since Wednesday afternoon.

The man, who had been vacationing in Breckenridge with his family, embarked

on a short day hike from the Blue Lakes Trail head Wednesday morning. When

his family had not heard from him by 5:30 p.m. that evening they alerted

search and rescue.

“We had 10 teams on the mountain Wednesday and we couldn’t find anything,”

Summit County Search and Rescue public information officer Anna DeBatiste

Summit County Search and Rescue teams called for statewide mutual aid on

Thursday to assist in the search, and rescuers from Mesa and Garfield

counties arrived at the scene mid-morning.

A rescue helicopter from the High Altitude Training Center of the Army

National Guard also assisted in searching the area.

“According to his family, this guy was an experiences hiker and he had

summited Quandary before,” DeBatiste said. “He knew what he was doing, so we

don’t know what happened.”

Quandary is the highest peak in the Tenmile Range, and trails are rated for

experienced to advanced climbers.

On June 13, climber Dan Heim survived a harrowing fall down the steep Monte

Christo couloir route on Quandary peak.

It took rescue workers three hours to lower Heim down the rock face, and the

climber was taken by a Flight-for-Life helicopter to a hospital in Denver.

Heim sustained a broken arm, head wounds, and a broken neck.
