Missing swimmer found dead in Yampa River

CRAIG, Colo. (AP) ” Search crews in Moffat County found the body Monday of a 13-year-old girl who vanished while swimming with relatives in the Yampa River.

The body was found less than 50 feet from where the girl was last seen alive, The Denver Post reported.

Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz said the teen went swimming about 6:30 p.m. Sunday with some cousins. The water level was low and the river conditions were considered normal for this time of year, he said.

The girl disappeared in the current of the river, Jantz said. Searchers looked for her until dark without success, and resumed their efforts at daylight.

An aircraft crew located the girl’s body about 8:30 a.m.

Her name was not been released. The Post said she had been visiting extended family in Craig, and that her parents were driving from Texas.
