Mix of trail activities offered June 3

Turn off the TV, grab your pack and go take a hike. On June 3, the White River National Forest (WRNF) wants you to stop by the Hanging Lake trailhead to hear about safe backcountry travel and then head for the hills. The American Hiking Society, Forest Conservancy and the WRNF will celebrate National Trails Day on June 3 with a gaggle of educational activities at the Hanging Lake Trailhead. Speakers will make presentations about Leave No Trace wilderness ethics and search and rescue, and there will be a talk by Woodsy Owl. Summit Canyon Mountaineering will also present a hiking gear demonstration.National Trails Day is the largest single-day celebration of trails and the joys of hiking. Grab a field guide and binoculars, and join the Roaring Fork Audubon Society for some bird finding fun. Call (970) 963-3479 for more information. n Enter a trail race or fun run. For those not excited about strolling through the woods on June 3, the Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers will be hosting trail work projects that day on the Sunnyside Trail near Aspen and on the Boy Scout-Forest Hollow Trail near Glenwood Springs. n Grab your kayak and go for a paddle. WRNF considers rivers trails, too. Rafting and kayaking in the Glenwood Canyon is another way to enjoy “wet trails.” Want to learn how to paddle? Colorado Mountain College, Glenwood Parks and Recreation and Glenwood Kayak offer whitewater safety classes.
