Mixed CSAP results for District 16

PARACHUTE ” Garfield School District No. 16 administrators have mixed feelings about this year’s Colorado Student Assessment Program scores.

While disappointed with reading and writing CSAP scores, administrators were pleased with improvements in math scores.

The test scores, which were released Tuesday, measures schools and districts against state averages and judges them on improvement over previous years. District 16 saw improvement in four out of six math scores this year.

“That really shows that we’re headed in the right direction,” said Sandy Hanson, District 16 public relations director. “We focused on the math curriculum.”

Hanson said math education became more personalized and teachers watched students achievement carefully, providing more small-group and one-on-one attention.

Most District 16 CSAP scores fall significantly short of the state average.

“The scores show that we need to do more work,” Hanson said. “It’s a matter of staying on top to see what’s working and what’s not.”

Hanson said the district has a new reading program that has only been in place for two years. She said it will probably take a little while before the program produces results, though a different test showed that kindergartners and first graders were doing well in all subjects.

Staff will go through an intensive writing instruction training at an in-service next week.

“We just constantly have to be looking for ways to help each student,” Hanson said.
