Mo. man struck by boulder on Highway 82 dies

A tragic accident claimed the life of a Missouri man who was leaving the Roaring Fork Valley after a vacation.

According to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol, Thomas Murphy, 45, of Kansas City, died late Friday night after being struck by boulder as he was driving down Highway 82 west of milemarker 28 in Pitkin County.

The boulder the size of a briefcase broke loose and hit Murphy’s Chevrolet Tahoe, knocking him unconscious.

Murphy’s wife, Jennifer Murphy, placed the vehicle in neutral in hopes that it would come to a stop. It took just over a mile for the Tahoe to finally stop with Jennifer Murphy attempting to control it from the front passenger seat.

The Murphy’s were traveling with their three boys, ages 4, 8, and 11. The 11-year-old boy was injured in this incident. The 4-year-old and 8-year-old boys were not injured.

Thomas Murphy was transported to Valley View Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
