More help is needed for hurricane victims in county

Members of VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters) seek additional community assistance for an estimated 14 families and individuals who were dislodged from the recent hurricanes and are now living in the Garfield County area. Although there is used clothing available at LIFT-UP and the Defiance Store, many hurricane victims require special sizes or new items. “The best thing that could happen for these new county residents would be for someone to take them shopping,” Salvation Army director, Micaela Johns said.Nationally, Catholic Charities is working with disaster victims with housing and handling case files. Catholic Charities serves as the one-stop agency where volunteers can sign up to give a hand to the transplanted hurricane families. Catholic Charities can be reached at 384-2060.United Way has offered to be the “acquisition” agency to find donated household goods, furniture, food and professional services needed by hurricane victims.
