Motorcycle crash kills Rifle man

A 55-year-old man died Tuesday when he lost control of his motorcycle and ran head-long into a semitrailer in Rifle.The accident also forced the closure of Highway 13 for four hours to clean up a resulting diesel fuel spill.Larry B. Long, 55, of Rifle was headed north on the Highway 13 bypass about a mile north of Highway 6 when he lost control and laid his motorcycle down on the road, the Colorado State Patrol reported. The motorcycle slid on its side for 116 feet, traveling into the southbound lane of Highway 13.A semitrailer driven by Rocky L. Washburn, 54, of Denver, was traveling south on Highway 13 and hit the motorcycle, which ended up under the semi.Long was killed instantly. The State Patrol was notified of the accident at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.A State Patrol Hazardous Materials Unit cleaned up about 50 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled as a result of the crash.The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Rifle fire and police departments and Colorado Department of Transportation also responded to the crash.
