A motorcyclist speeding from a Colorado State Patrol officer was killed Saturday evening when he hit a guardrail. John Anthony Thomas Jr., 25, of Carbondale was traveling 85 mph in a posted 65 zone at milepost 10 on Highway 82, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Trooper Joseph Lemoine, who was parked on the shoulder of Highway 82, observed Thomas about 6:50 p.m. and attempted to stop him, but Thomas accelerated. Thomas turned onto County Road 154 (the Buffalo Valley road). There, Thomas hit a guardrail after failing to negotiate a turn.Officials performed CPR, but Thomas died at the scene. The Colorado State Patrol investigated the accident and determined it occurred due to excessive speed. The CSP determined Thomas was riding an unregistered motorcycle, and his license was revoked because of his status as a habitual traffic offender.
