Mountain Fair is next weekend

Staff ReportTake out the tie-dye and shake out the dancing shoes, Mountain Fair is just around the corner.The 32nd annual Carbondale Mountain Fair will blossom in Sopris Park, Friday through Sunday, July 25-27. The free outdoor festival features artisans, fabulous food with an international menu, 14 nationally touring music groups as well as regional and local performers.As always, there will be plenty for the kids to do at this year’s fair, with eight performances, a children’s area with games, hands-on activities and contests.Fair mainstays are back, such as the wood splitting contests on Saturday at 6 p.m. for women and Sunday at 4 p.m. for men.Fly casting is at 10 a.m. Saturday. The horseshoe tournament is at high noon on Saturday at Glassier Park, two blocks south of Sopris Park on Weant Blvd. Limber beings can flex their frames in the limbo contest, headed up by the inimitable Dr. Limbo, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.Don’t miss the pie contest at 11 a.m. Saturday and the cake contest at 11 a.m. Sunday.The first annual Virgin Unadulterated Mountain Fair Porcupine Loop Mountain Bike Race is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.The 24th annual Mount Sopris Runoff footrace from Basalt to the Mountain Fair starts at the Basalt 7-Eleven at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the finish line at Sopris Park.Volunteers are needed for T-shirt and pop sales, traffic & trash control, peace patrol, raffle ticket sales, ambassadors, set-up and break-down, etc. Volunteers who work four hours receive the coveted Friend-of-Fair T-shirt.
