New school wins fans

Garfield School District Re-2 reports an enthusiastic turnout for the official ribbon-cutting at Highland Elementary in Rifle on Saturday, July 26.

District officials unveiled the $8 million building to around 450 children, parents and citizens, generating plenty of “oohs” and “ahhhs” – and even a little jealousy.

“I wish I could go back a few grades and go here,” said Courtney Negley, a fifth grader heading to Rifle Middle School in August.

Retired teacher Harriet Slagowski cut the ribbon with the help of 5-year-old Elliot Krebill, first grader Melissa Steinbach and second grader Patrick Steinbach.

Highland, a preschool through fourth grade elementary school, replaces Esma Lewis Elementary, which is now being used as part of the Rifle Middle School campus.

Petey finds a home

This one falls under the category of “not everything you read in the newspaper is sad and distressing.”

Petey, the adorable little kitten featured on the cover of Tuesday’s Post Independent, has found a home. PI publisher Valerie Smith heard that the black and white kitty, pictured peering through the bars of a cage at the Colorado Animal Rescue shelter in Spring Valley, was adopted within hours of appearing in the paper. Several other kittens were adopted Tuesday from the shelter as well.
