My Side

Post Independent Writer

I am Kathleen Curry, and I am running for the Colorado State House, District 61. My goal in this column is to tell you who I am, why I’m running and what I believe, all in hopes of earning your vote on Nov. 2. For 15 years I’ve worked in the Colorado water business. For the past 6 years I managed the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District and in 2003 received the Water Manager of the Year award. Community involvement is very important to me, from my son’s hockey practices to being a Club 20 board member. At home, I am married to a rancher, Greg Peterson, and am the mother of two fine boys and two rowdy ranch dogs. From raising my kids to my years managing and protecting our water, I feel it has all been great training for the job as state representative. I am ready to hit the ground running as your legislator. What we don’t have in Denver in terms of population, money, or power, we must make up for with effective leadership. When I get to Denver I will promote energy development practices that protect the interests of the surface owners and the environment. I will fight to protect Western Slope water resources. I will seek resolution of the state budget crisis. I will stand up for local control on issues like education and transportation. The General Assembly should work to reduce health care costs and improve the climate for small businesses and tourism. The legislature has a tremendous impact on all of us. Funding for transportation, education and health care is declining. It takes leadership and experience to defend our community. A lot of people ask me why I would want to enter into politics. The response is that I am pursuing leadership – the reason I am running for this seat is to bring my experience as an effective leader to Denver on behalf of District 61. The election process so far has been positive and issue-focused and I am lucky to be running against two individuals that I like and respect. But this race for House District 61 has been, and continues to be, about who will most effectively represent us at the State House. I believe that I am that person. Thank you for voting in this very important election. For more details on my platform visit http://www.kathleencurry.com A lot of people ask me why I would want to enter into politics.
