New Castle had the best Independence Day ever

Dear Editor,

This letter is addressed to the firefighters and command team of the Spring Creek Fire:

Out of the worst of times, the best becomes evident.

The evening of July 4, local talent from the town of New Castle put together an impromptu talent show. Gathered by Karen Wood, past queens and present contestants from the Burning Mountain Pageant, two Miss Colorado queens from New Castle, and the incomparable Jack Jabbour entertained you at the Command Center at Riverside School to show, in some small form, our heartfelt appreciation.

As I looked across the audience at your blackened, fatigued faces, after spending the day on the fire line, the gratitude I felt was overwhelming. Some of you didn’t look any older than my teenage son. I knew we were in good hands. I knew I made the right choice in unpacking my car of papers and irreplaceable personal items earlier in the day. I knew that in spending my July Fourth evening with you and the local talent in the school auditorium, I would remember it as my best Independence Day ever.

Thank you,

Toni Black
