Phil and Judy Shaffer, proud parents of Andy Shaffer, who graduated from Rifle High School in 1999, are thrilled they will be spending Labor Day observing their son’s mechanical skills during the Grand Prix of Denver. The younger Shaffer is a Lynx Racing Team mechanic based out of Sonoma, Calif. The racing team competes in the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship Series. The team won the Fundidore Park race in Monterrey, Mexico, on March 10 and took first place in the Road America Race in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin on Aug. 18. Approximately 75 of Larry and Diane Borgard’s admirers gave them a lovely send-off at Burning Mountain Park during the end of July. Larry was involved in most every volunteer organization in New Castle, and a past Glenwood Springs volunteer as well. He was nominated for the 2002 Garfield County Humanitarian of the Year Award and was named New Castle Lion of the Year 2003, He was on YouthZone’s Board of Directors from 1992-99, a Kiss-n-Squeal candidate in 1992, and was named YouthZone Board member Emeritus 2000. New Castle mover-and-shaker Judy Shaffer said of Larry and Diane, “It didn’t matter what project, Larry and Diane always stepped up to the plate to help wherever they could. Their positive attitude and spirit of fun made them ideal to do any project.” Larry was appointed to the New Castle Town Council on Dec. 3, 1996, and served until April 18, 2000. He was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 27, 1993, and served until April 12, 2000.Borgard was a great role model for neighborhood children who enjoyed visiting him in his garage while he used his leisure time crafting his many projects.-Rifle’s Super Wal-Mart will be holding a Grand Opening Ceremony at 7:30 a.m., Oct. 29, with the doors opening at 8 am.Wal-Mart manager Will Erickson said, “Basically anything you need to live, we’ve got it. If you can’t get it here, you probably don’t need it. What’s exciting is all the new things we’re bringing to Rifle.”The new store will feature groceries, fresh bakery, meat and produce departments, a hair styling salon, portrait studio, vision clinic, tire/oil change facility, and a one-hour photo processing department.Wal-Mart has planted approximately 30 trees to beautify the area around its new store. There are 776 parking spaces, enough for everyone.Every Wal-Mart associate has a Volume Producing Item, which changes every month and is quite the competition among associates.
