New Castle Town Council votes in a pay raise

NEW CASTLE ” Incoming and re-elected Town Council members here will be getting a boost in pay for performing their civic service.

The pay increase was unanimously approved by the five Town Council members present at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

Town Council can’t give itself a raise during a term, but any new or re-elected members of council will benefit from the increase. That means the three people elected on April 6 will receive the raise beginning at the next meeting.

Regular council members’ pay will rise from $30 to $50 per meeting, a 66 percent increase. At two meetings per month, that comes to $1,200 each for six council members, or $7,200 total.

But it’s the mayor who will get the biggest boost. The current pay of $35 per meeting will jump to $100 per meeting, a 185 percent jump. At this rate, the mayor’s yearly take would jump from $840 to $2,400.

Council also pledged to make the necessary repairs to a dog kennel at the Apple Tree mobile home park.

“We have been working with the Apple Tree park for many years using their kennel as a holding facility,” town manager Steve Rippy said.

But that kennel was shut down by the state in 2003 because of some minor problems.

“My understanding is they just need to have better separation,” Rippy said.

The board approved making $800 to $1,000 in upgrades, then paying $200 per month to use the kennel as a holding facility, Rippy said.
