New St. Stephen’s dedicated

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – Priests, members of the Knights of Columbus, and parishioners from around Colorado gathered Thursday night to dedicate the newly constructed St. Stephen’s Catholic Church.

The dedication began with the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s group, in black ceremonial uniforms, escorting Auxiliary Bishop Jose Gomez of the Denver Archdiocese along Blake Avenue from the neighboring St. Stephen’s Catholic School to the newly constructed church.

Gomez was accompanied by other priests of the Archdiocese of Denver, and St. Stephen’s priests, including Rev. Cliff McMillan.

Once inside the church, the Knights of Columbus stood at attention on either side of the center aisle, swords drawn, as the procession of altarboys, priests and the auxiliary bishop walked toward the altar. As they walked, the parish sang, “Let Us Go Rejoicing.”

Once assembled at the front of the church, Mike Haselden, whose company constructed the church, handed over the church keys to Gomez.

“It is a great joy for me to be here,” said Gomez, “for the dedication of this beautiful church.”

The church sanctuary, with its bright stained-glass windows, shiny new wooden doors and pews, and soaring ceiling, was filled with parishioners.

The congregation overflowed from the pews in the main part of the church to the choir loft, high in the rear of the church.

The dedication was the first Mass for the new church at 19th Street and Blake. The new building replaces the old church at 1010 Grand Ave.
