New supervisor named for White River National Forest

Scott Fitzwilliams has been selected as forest supervisor for the White River National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday.

Fitzwilliams will take over the top post in the White River in late August or early September. He succeeds Maribeth Gustafson, who was promoted in late 2008 to a post in the federal agency’s regional office in Lakewood after holding the post in Glenwood Springs for about 31⁄2 years.

The White River National Forest spans about 2.3 million acres from south of Aspen to Meeker and Rifle to Summit County. It includes the Aspen-Sopris District.

“Scott was truly the best candidate for this position and will be coming to the Rocky Mountain Region with a track record of success across several forests in four western states,” said Rick Cables, Rocky Mountain Regional Forester.

Fitzwilliams began his Forest Service career about 20 years ago as an intern in the regional office of the Rocky Mountain Region. Most recently, he served as both the acting and deputy forest supervisor on the Willamette National Forest in Eugene, Ore. He also served as recreation, lands and minerals staff officer on the Tongass National Forest in Alaska; district ranger on the Little Missouri National Grassland in North Dakota; and public affairs officer on the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.
