New Volvo, Elk Mountain Motors facilities planned

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. Architects are polishing their plans for two auto dealership buildings in Glenwood Springs.A 16,245-square-foot Volvo dealership is being planned at the Two Rivers Plaza subdivision at Devereux Road and Highway 6.Meanwhile, plans are in the works to replace the modular Elk Mountain Motors used car sales building in West Glenwood with a permanent structure.Conceptual plans for both projects were presented to Glenwood Springs City Council Thursday night.Roaring Fork Volvo plans to build a facility that will provide new and used car sales, repairs and service. Its current dealership is located on 6th Street. Two possible building designs have been submitted, both of which include a white metal building and a blue tower bearing the Volvo sign. The dealership would be in a commercial zone district where that use is allowed, but the development would be subject to special review. Also a consideration is the fact that the city is now leaning toward building a roundabout at Highway 6 and Devereux Road. City community development director Andrew McGregor noted that the Two Rivers Plaza subdivision was designed based on a T-intersection rather than a roundabout.”This is a little bit of a departure from all the design work that’s occurred to this point. Our (roundabout) designers will have to be very sensitive to the sort of expectations and vested rights that the Volvo dealership has at this point. I’m sure it can be resolved,” he told council members Thursday.Hal Dishler, an Aspen attorney working on the project, said it didn’t appear the conceptual roundabout design would incur much onto the Volvo property.Council member Dave Johnson questioned whether the 72 parking spaces planned for the site is a normal amount for a car dealership or “a lot of asphalt.””You can’t sell cars unless you have them there,” project representative Jennifer Tuggle responded. The new Elk Mountain Motors building would be architecturally consistent with the company’s existing new car dealership to the west. Elk Mountain Motors is a Volkswagen and Audi dealership located in the Gilstrap subdivision near the Interstate 70 interchange in West Glenwood. The developers are planning a building to house a display area, sales and administrative offices, and service bays.Contact Dennis Webb: 384-9119dwebb@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
