Nighttime closure for detour work, ‘square about’ opens Wednesday

A big part of the Grand Avenue bridge detour takes effect Thursday morning: the “square-about.” The bridge itself does not close until Monday, though.
Downtown Glenwood Springs streets that are part of the detour route will be closed from 8 p.m. tonight until 7 a.m. Wednesday for final paint-striping.
Street closures will be in effect on Eighth and Ninth streets from Grand to Colorado Avenue, and on Colorado from Eighth to Ninth streets. No street parking will be allowed during the closure.
When the streets reopen Wednesday morning, the counter-clockwise “square-about” section of the forthcoming detour will be in effect and the new traffic signal at Eighth and Colorado will be activated, according to bridge project officials.
At that time, Eighth Street from Grand to Colorado will become one-way westbound, Colorado from Eighth to Ninth will be one-way southbound, and Ninth from Colorado to Grand will be one-way eastbound.
During the nighttime closure, Eighth Street eastbound traffic coming from Midland Avenue should turn right on Pitkin Avenue, then left on 10th Street for access to Grand Avenue/Colorado 82.
Westbound traffic headed to Midland Avenue should turn left at 10th, right on Pitkin and left onto Eighth Street.
In addition, crews will be striping the Interstate 70 Exit 114 eastbound on-ramp tonight. Flaggers will be in the area to assist with traffic control.
