CARBONDALE, Colorado ” The County Road 100 fire broke out west of Carbondale on April 15, burning close to 1,000 acres, threatening about 150 homes, and slightly damaging three, in the Ranch at Roaring Fork and Missouri Heights subdivisions.

Local rancher Larry Gerbaz was charged with two fourth-degree arson charges in July.

He pleaded not guilty to those charges on Dec, 11.

Gerbaz was also later sued by an angler, Larry Garfinkel, who was injured in the fire and narrowly escaped by jumping into the Roaring Fork River.

Authorities said the fire started at the Gerbaz family ranch on County Road 100 after Gerbaz told them he burned a wood pile in his pasture the weekend before the fire.

Investigators believe high winds later teased sparks from the wood pile into flames.
