No decision yet on new Roaring Fork schools superintendent

The Roaring Fork schools board is not yet ready to announce the district’s next superintendent.

“We hope to have an announcement within the next week, as soon as we are ready,” Board of Education President Kathryn Kuhlenberg said at the start of the Wednesday evening board meeting in Carbondale.

Wednesday was the earliest day the board had indicated it may decide between three finalists who were announced April 6. However, the board said it could take longer.

The district has been conducting a search to replace Superintendent Rob Stein, who is leaving at the end of the current school year.

Finalists for the position are Tammy Clementi, Jose “Joe” Lopez and Jesús Rodriguez. Clementi and Rodriguez both have extensive backgrounds at the district and state level in Colorado, while Lopez has been a schools administrator in Texas. Rodriguez is also currently an administrator in Dallas public schools.

Each candidate separately visited the district earlier this month to interview with the school board and meet with the executive team and advisory groups, and to attend a public meet-and-greet and community forum.

“The board received a lot of feedback about the candidates,” Kuhlenberg said in a memo that was included in Wednesday board meeting packet. “As we move into the final phases of the process, we will reread the Leadership Profile (the result of over 1,400 public comments), and will read every comment that we have received on the finalists.

“This feedback is an important component, but not the only component that we consider,” she said of the pending decision.
