No doubt about it: McMillan supports Glenwood Airport

Dear Editor,

I was appalled by the letter to the editor from Lorenz T. Martensen about statements I allegedly made to the National Air Transportation Association. Mr. Martensen has been trying to close the Glenwood Airport for years.

Mr. Martensen took my words out of context and made it seem as if I believed the airport was dangerous and needed to be closed. Nothing is farther from the truth. I am one of the largest supporters of the Glenwood Springs Airport.

If I wanted the airport to close, why would I want it to be on the 100 Most Needed Airports and base my personal airplane there?

Mr. Martensen quotes me about comments made by Mr. Swint in SW Aviator magazine. I was not the airport manager in 2002, and I don’t remember ever talking to Mr. Swint, nor have I ever seconded his comments.

The crash of an airplane near Dr. Jackson’s home, although tragic, was caused by pilot error from being overloaded. That accident could have happened at any mountain airport.

There is only a river at the south end, not at both ends as Mr. Martensen writes. He also quotes me about taking off on runway 32 and there being two schools under the plane. No school is in the flight path, and most pilots take off on 14 to the south. The taxiway is narrow; there are many airports which do not have parallel taxiways.

Get your facts straight and don’t misquote me in the paper.
