No more dogs loose in the back of trucks

Dear Editor,

We’ve all seen it: dogs loose in the back of trucks. While I think that it’s wonderful that people take their dogs with them, I have a huge concern for the well-being of these animals.

One of my co-workers drives from Glenwood Springs to El Jebel every morning. She has seen three dogs in the past month lying on the road from apparently falling out of the back of pickup trucks (two were in one day).

I’ve been told before, “My dog would never jump out of the truck,” and my answer is always, “Yes, but what about the dog accidentally falling out of the truck?” During the winter, there is an added hazard: icy truck beds. When a vehicle is driving at even low speeds, it’s difficult for a dog to keep its footing. Then there are the dogs on flat-bed trucks; this act doesn’t even deserve a comment.

It’s obvious that these people love their dogs, or they wouldn’t be taking them to work with them (or the grocery store, the mall, etc?). I just want them to think about the welfare of these animals, as well as the people driving behind them. Not only is this a horrible thing to happen to their dog, it’s very dangerous for the people in the cars behind them.

I am asking that people please find an alternative way to travel with their dogs. There are all sizes of crates available in addition to sharing cab space. The owners can avoid experiencing a great loss, and the dogs as well as the people traveling behind them will be safer.

Thank you,

Malinda Isenhart
