`No’ on river district mill levy increase

Bob Richardson

Dear Editor,

Please vote “no” on Referendum 4A, the approximately $54 million doubling of the mill levy for the Colorado River Water Conservancy District.

I can’t remember a requested tax increase with less justification and, hence, less explanation. And that is saying something when you consider what we have suffered at the hands of CMC!

The River District, with a multi-county base, spends money like water yet produces very little of it.

The River District has always relied, and is once again relying, on our instinct, historically, to support “water for the Western Slope” which ranks in Western Colorado right up there with “our children – our most precious resource” for the best revenue-raising slogan in politics.

It is time – and then some – to be smarter than that and demand some accountability. Which doesn’t exist.

Thanks for listening.

Bob Richardson
