Nonprofit seeks help to repair fire damage

A fire at the Carbondale office of the Center for Independence last week apparently was set from the outside.

Officials with the Center for Independence nonprofit organization on Tuesday asked for donations to help repair damage from an apparent arson last week at the group’s Carbondale office.

The incident at the Third Street Center occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 16. No one was hurt, but the fire and water used to put it out caused an estimated $15,000 in damage, the center said in a news release.

Carbondale police have said they believe the fire was related to a bank break-in later that morning, and said Tuesday that nothing is new in the investigation.

Center for Independence Executive Director Linda Taylor told the Post Independent she believes the office was targeted, though.

“We need your donations, big and small, to help us get back on our feet in our Carbondale office,” the Grand Junction-based organization said in its news release. “So many people with disabilities are counting on us. CFI took a huge hit, and we have found that we were underinsured.”

The release said donations may be made through the nonprofit’s website, People may call CFI at 970-241-0315 for more information.
