Nonprofits in a froth to sling beer at Carbondale’s Mountain Fair

More than 30 nonprofits responded to the Carbondale Mountain Fair’s offer to work shifts at its Cantina beer garden.

The Carbondale Mountain Fair, and the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities, its sponsoring nonprofit, put out the word last week that it was offering nonprofit groups $1,000 for five four-hour shifts at the fair’s beer garden.

The fair is set for July 26 to 28 at Sopris Park.

“I had no doubt we would be able to fill the shifts, but I had no idea that more than 30 groups would call,” said CCAH director Thomas Lawley. “This will help us, and we’ll be able to help them. That’s what the Mountain Fair is all about.”

Lawley said 31 nonprofits responded to the beer garden offer. After an article in the July 8 Post Independent reporting that two nonprofits had signed up, the other three open shifts were filled by noon the same day.

A sixth shift was added when Thunder River Theatre Company said it would donate its $1,000 back to CCAH.

The six nonprofits that will staff 12-person shifts at the fair are Thunder River Theatre Company, Stepstone Center, Mountain Regional Housing Corp., Sopris Therapy Services, KDNK public radio and the Bookcliffs Arts Council.

Other nonprofit food vendors are Colorado Rocky Mountain School, Boy Scout Troop No. 235, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, St. Mary of the Crown Youth Group, Mt. Sopris Montessori School, Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork, Carbondale Community United Methodist Church and Boy Scout Troop No. 242.
