Norma Grace Smith

Norma Grace Smith of Battlement Mesa, a former resident of Glenwood Springs, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at her home. She was 76.

She was born May 25, 1927, in Warwick, R.I., to Norman and Dalene (Warburton) Edwards. She graduated from high school in Warwick in 1944 at age 17, and went on to attend two years of secretarial school.

In 1945 she moved to Colorado, where she met Marvin “Bill” Smith while skiing at Berthoud Pass ski area. They married on Sept. 26, 1952, in Denver.



The Smiths lived in many places in Colorado. They enjoyed skiing, camping, hiking and fishing.

Mrs. Smith was passionate about her time to read, garden, play bridge and cook. She was an intelligent woman with a big heart, a quick wit, a sharp sense of style and a passion for conversations about the world.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Smith, in 1995; and by a son, Scott Smith, in 1985.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Saathoff of Glenwood Springs; by sons and daughters-in-law Brad and Debbie Smith of Los Alamos, N.M., Stephen and Penny Smith of Sand Point, Idaho, and Mark Smith of La Grande, Ore.; and by grandchildren Sarah and Lisa Saathoff, Jenny and Chris Smith, Adam and Nick Smith and Avery Smith.

A memorial and open house will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, at Mrs. Smith’s home in Battlement Mesa.

Farnum Holt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
