Not a latecomer to this war protest

Dear Editor,

I’m not waiting five years to decide that this proposed war is a big mistake. In the ’60s, believing in my government, it took me five years to decide that the Vietnam War was ludicrous. Not this time.

To consider invading Iraq (or any country for that matter) without obvious provocation is so abhorrent I am embarrassed for our leaders.

Why do we have to be such a bully? We have a miserable record of meddling in other peoples’ affairs and with few exceptions come out looking silly.

To go it alone in Iraq – and we will be alone – will alienate some of our best allies, will convince other moderate states that we really are to be feared, and push to action others that have only been toying with the idea of anti-American terrorism.

I am not going to feel safer as a result of an Iraq invasion. I will be embarrassed for our country in the eyes of the world by the actions of this administration. And, like 33 years ago, I’ll be back marching down Pennsylvania Avenue protesting this war.
