David James ‘Jim’ Brademas Dec 15, 1929 – Aug 19, 2013

  

David James “Jim” Brademas, 83, passed away after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Mishawaka, IN, and grew up in South Bend, IN, and joined the Navy after high school. He earned B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Illinois in Leisure Studies (Recreation). He married Edith Anne “Than” Penington on June 9, 1955.

Jim taught English as a Fulbright Scholar in Athens, Greece. He was the first Superintendent of Recreation for Rockford, IL, Park District in 1956. After several other jobs, he earned his Ph.D. in 1976. Jim then taught Recreation at University of Illinois for 25 years. Jim and Than retired to Tucson, AZ, in 2000.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Beatrice Brademas; and brother Tom Brademas. Survived by his wife; four children Jeff (Judy) Brademas, Nairobi, Kenya; Jennifer Brademas, Virginia Beach; Kathy (Dan) Young, Silt, CO; Christina Brademas, Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren; brother John (Mary Ellen) Brademas, New York, NY; sister Eleanor Keb, South Bend, IN. A service will be held on September 21, 2013.
