Dieter Martini

Dieter Martini passed on January 13, 2015 after a long illness. He was born inFogarasch, Romania on January 31, 1960 to Karl and Katharina (Kloess) Martini. He had many fond memories of his childhood summers in his mother’s village and was proud of his Transylvania Saxon heritage. In 1974 the family moved to Munich, Germany.

While attending university, Dieter said “they left the lab door open one day and this rat escaped.” So he came to the U.S. in 1982. He settled in Northern California first where he created a life for himself living off-grid in a tipi with his garden and wild land. He also became a certified Massage Therapist and Hypnotherapist with a practice in Garberville, CA. His son, Soren Winter, was born there in 1988. In 1993 he moved to Carbondale to be closer to his son and learned the carpentry trade. He was a skilled, self employed carpenter working around the valley. His work schedule created the time to pursue other interests such as, skiing, backpacking, traveling, gardening, and long conversations with strangers on the street. He also served on the Carbondale Board of Adjustments and Tree Board.

In 1996 he met Kathleen Weber through a mutual friend. They quickly shared a bond over a love of the mountains and outdoor activities and married in October 1997 in Carbondale. In their 17 years together they had many fun times from climbing Mount Olympus in Greece, trekking in New Zealand, backpacking along the coast of the Big Island, hot springs wherever they could be found, to many, many long weekends exploring the valley.

He was a wild man and rebel at heart, and lived life on his own terms. Was also known as a generous person always wanting to help others and a memorable character very passionate about whatever topic or idea was on his mind at the time.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Martini of Carbondale, son Soren Winter of Taos, NM, parents Karl and Katharina Martini of Karlsfeld, Germany, sister Erika (Thomas) Honka of Munich, Germany.

Burial and Memorial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Carbondale on Friday January 30, 2015 at 1 p.m. Please bring stories to share.
