Gary Ray Friend

Gary Ray Friend passed away peacefully at his home on October 22, 2014, at the age of 62. Gary was born on July 17, 1952 in Alliance, Ohio to Hugh A. Friend and Helen E. (Fitzwater) Friend.

His early education was in Berry Burg, West Virginia and for high school he attended Southern High School in Oakland, Maryland, graduating in1970. After high school, he attended two years of college.

In 1976 Gary moved to Carbondale, Colorado to work at Mid Continent coal with his father. After moving to Colorado he fell in love with the forest and the mountains, where he loved to spend time fishing, and hiking the streams and creeks.

Gary loved playing softball for the Creatures softball team in Carbondale and he enjoyed watching sports with his brother, Terry as well as other family and friends. His favorite teams were the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gary loved music and was a talented singer with a beautiful baritone voice. He was a thoughtful intelligent man, quick to laugh, with a comical wit, and always ready with a comeback.

He enjoyed debating politics with family and friends. Gary had an incredible love of animals and was rarely without a four legged friend. Gary was a talented woodworker who specialized in creating unique pieces using only recycled barn wood.

Gary met the love of his life, Sally Summers, in 1972 in Oakland, Maryland. Together in 1976 they began a new life in Colorado. They were united in marriage on his 30th birthday on July 17, 1982, in Carbondale, Colorado. The couple remained in the Roaring Fork Valley for 38 years, settling in New Castle, Colorado.

He is survived by his wife Sally Friend, mother Helen E. (Fitzwater) Friend of Oakland, Maryland, brother Terry L. Friend (Sandi) of Houston Texas, sisters Judy Moore (Danny) of Comox, British Columbia, nieces Lindsay Friend (Sam Delbridge), Amy (Friend) Perkins, Shannon Moore (Kevin Doherty) and Keltie (Phil) Schalm, nephews Tony Friend, Alexander Charles Summers, great niece Aaliyah Delbridge, great nephew Tucker Perkins, numerous aunts, cousins as well as close friends.

Gary is preceded in death by his father Hugh A. Friend, his beloved grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins, close friends, as well as his beloved dogs Badger and Sadie.

A visitation will be held Monday October 27, 2014 from 5-8 p.m., at the Farnum Holt Funeral Home Chapel in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday October 28, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Farnum Holt Funeral Home Chapel In Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The family suggest memorial contributions be sent to the Rifle Animal Shelter.
