Jack Petitt Phillippe Sept. 24, 1924 – Sept. 08, 2013
Jack Petitt Phillippe was born in Nowata, OK, in 1924. He died peacefully in his sleep on September 8, 2013.
Jack’s great-great-grandmother was a Cherokee who came to what is now Oklahoma on the trail of tears. His parents were born in Indian Territory, in a small town east of Tulsa. Jack graduated from Hugoton High School, in southwest Kansas.
Jack was barely 17 when Pearl Harbor was attacked and the war in the Pacific broke out. He joined the Marines soon after, which required his parents’ signature because of his age. He was the tail gunner on a B25 Mitchell bomber. His group was responsible for photo reconnaissance for the Marines in the Pacific and saw action in the battles at Midway, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and others. His nickname in the Marines was “Shoot ‘em up Phillippe.”
Following the war, he attended the University of Oklahoma where he received his degree in Petroleum Engineering and met the love of his life, Judy Pratt. They were happily married until her death in 1989. After graduation, he went to work for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, where he continued working until his retirement. Except for a few years in Port Huron, Michigan, Jack’s professional career was spent in Liberal, Kansas, where he was the Manager of Drilling and Production for the company.
Jack and his family vacationed in Crested Butte, Colorado, starting in 1952. Crested Butte was always a place he and Judy loved.
Jack and Judy bought a small prairie homestead east of Liberal in 1973 and began remodeling it, doing nearly all the work themselves. It was a beautiful home, surrounded by trees, near the Cimarron River. Jack moved to Glenwood Springs, CO, to live with his daughter Sidonie, and Daniel Gross in 2004 until he moved to Sacramento to live with his son, Stan Phillippe.
Jack and Judy are survived by their three children: Stanley Richard, who lives in Carmichael, CA (wife Nancy McGee); Sara Jane, of Pueblo, CO; and Sidonie Jo (husband Daniel Gross) of Glenwood Springs, CO. Grandchildren: Toby Richard Jennings Phillippe (with wife Ayesha Rahim and great-grandsons Solomon and Raphael); Erika Sky Scholl (husband Jason and great-grandsons Adon and Zander); Aston Marie Ferland (husband Erik); Eric Philip Schaub; and Jack Phillippe McGee. Jack will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
