Joseph Arthur Van Benthuysen

Joseph Arthur Van Benthuysen (Joe Van) passed away in his sleep on June 25, 2014, after a short, courageous, and graceful battle with lung cancer. He was born on March 17, 1943, in Paterson, New Jersey, to Marilyn Barnhart and Joseph Walter Van Benthuysen. He attended grade school in Oakland, NJ, and then served in the US Navy Reserve. After his service, he attended the School of Professional Paperhangers and the New York School of Design where he learned the art of wallpaper hanging. This training began one of Joe’s lifelong loves, which was being “on the wall.” The love he had for his work was only superseded by the love he had for his daughters Melissa and Melanie. Joe also loved living in Colorado where he maintained a highly active lifestyle downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking and rollerblading. Joe is also survived by four grandchildren, two sons-in-law, two brothers, and friends too numerous to count. A memorial service was held at Archer United Methodist Church in Allendale, NJ, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 29. Condolences can be sent to 199 Bearfort Road, West Milford, NJ 07480.
