Matthew Van Portfliet

Matthew was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on January 22, 1931, to Adrian and Caroline Van Portfliet. Matt was five when his father passed and Roy Eshenhower became his dad. Matt’s older brother Rod preceded him in death, younger brother, Jim (Pat) and step-sister, Judy, still reside in Grand Rapids.

In 1952, while stationed in Germany serving in the Air Force, Matt met the love of his life, Maria. They married in 1955 and raised two sons, William and Wade. In 1982 Matt moved the family to the Roaring Fork Valley. While they lived in Blue Lake, Matt worked building custom homes. Upon retirement, they moved to Silt Mesa where Matt spend his days tinkering in his wood shop.

Matt died on January 30, 2015, at the age of 84. Three days later, Matt and Maria would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together they witnessed the marriages of their sons, Bill to Barbie and Wade to (Mary) Lee. They have 3 granddaughters; Brandy (Cal), Brooke (Justin), Kelli and 4 great-granddaughters; Trey and Kyanne Casey, Mercedes and Beau Cargill.
