Norvel James (Jim) McKay

Norvel James (Jim) McKay died Tuesday, April 12th, at the Colorado State Veteran’s Nursing Home in Rifle, Colorado. Jim was born to Donald and May McKay in 1919; he grew up in Rio Blanco, and attended schools in Rifle. Jim and his brothers learned to love hunting and fishing and Jim wandered the surrounding area and collected fossils and arrowheads. He served in the Army in WWII and married Betty Van Horn of Gypsum. Jim worked at Glenwood Gardens before he and Betty bought Flowers by Darrell (Flower Mart). Jim and Betty loved to travel; she preceded him in death and then Jim married his high school sweetheart, Mary Cook Anders; she survives. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his Aunt Merle Brenton and his brothers Robert McKay and Lin McKay. Among survivors are his cousin Goldia (Jerry) Moomey of Meeker; nephews Warren (Virginia), Bruce (Kat), and Donald (Kelly) McKay of Grand Junction, and Darrell (Nickey) McKay of Pea Green, Colorado. Nieces, Donna (Jerry) Lund of Ridgefield, WA; Rilla (Dana) Snyder of Glenwood Springs; Betty Rupp of Montrose, and Vivian McKay of Grand Junction. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 824 Cooper Ave., Glenwood Springs, Colorado on May 20th at 11:00 a.m.
