It is with great sorrow that we are experiencing the loss of Randy Ross, deeply loved husband, father and friend to many. Randy passed away in his home from complications of an acute illness. He was a man full of compassion for others and conviction that being interconnected with everyone and everything is imperative.
Randy is survived by Susan, his wife and love of his life and his multi-talented son, David. Randy was born in Houston, Texas. He spent his youth in Dallas with his grandmother and moved to Atlanta with his mother as a teen. He excelled in school and attended Baylor University for his undergraduate degree in Psychology. He moved to Denver with his first wife and attended The University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work and received his MSW. He also completed a post-master’s degree in Family Systems therapy. He was invited to participate in an externship at the prestigious MRI institute in California which specialized in innovative psychotherapy practices. Randy started his career practicing family therapy. Through those experiences he recognized the extent of domestic violence that occurs in families and how destructive this is for the entire family. Along with a few other professionals, he developed one of the first domestic violence treatment programs in the country – AMEND.
It was during this time period that he met Sue at a professional meeting. After that meeting, both Randy and Sue shared with others that they felt like they already knew each other, even though they had never met before. They were truly soulmates. They had a marriage ceremony in Boulder with family and friends, and were officially married in St. Lucia. Randy and Sue moved from Denver to Glenwood Springs/Rifle area 20 years ago. They had a private psychotherapy practice, doing individual therapy and providing couples counseling as a team. Randy also did crisis counseling which gave him the opportunity to participate in the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Garfield County and the Garfield County Homeless Coalition along with other non-profit organizations. He was on the board of the Salvation Army for many years providing leadership, pro-bono therapy services and lots of humor in challenging times. He ended his career working for hospice and homecare agencies providing social work services and compassionate care to individuals nearing the end of life.
Randy, Sue and “Hope”, their crazy dog, along with David and friends, enjoyed doing all things outdoors including; camping, hiking, biking, fishing, sailing, and canoeing. Randy took immense pride in building campfires “just the right way”. He always talked about the “next adventure” we were going to have. Now Randy is on his next adventure, while his energy and love will continue to be present in all of us.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Salvation Army of Garfield County, Garfield County Homeless Coalton or the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Garfield County.
Memorial Services will be held April 12. Contact Sue Ross for details.
