William Bernard Bevins, Jr.
William Bernard Bevins, Jr., of New Castle, CO, age 59, died on Monday, June 27, while hiking above Grizzly Creek. Bill, born in Georgetown, KY, to Ann and William Bernard Bevins, Sr., graduated from Georgetown College in 1978 with a B.S. degree, the University of Louisville in 1982 with an M.D., obtained a Family Practice specialty, a Tropical Medicine specialty, and was working toward a Master of Arts in Global Leadership. At Georgetown College, he met Janice Smith, and they were married December 21, 1976. An emergency room physician and medical educator for most of his career, Bill worked at Valley View Hospital before living in Kenya for 5 years, and later in Central Asia, where he managed emergency medicine and residency programs. Since returning to Colorado in 2013, he worked for Grand River Health.
Bill was an Eagle Scout, and a longtime member of the American Academy of Physicians and the CMDA. He served as medical advisor to ski patrols in three states, and for many years provided emergency medical support at kayak races and other outdoor events. Having summited many 14’ers in Colorado, Mt. Fuji, Kenya, and others, Bill was still an avid outdoorsman, and was training to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro this August with his family. Bill called the American West “paradise,” and with his family found a home over the years in Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado, but his heart was also with family in Kentucky.
Bill loved God and he loved people. As a physician, Bill cared for each patient as an individual, beloved of God. Similarly, what gave him the most joy in his outdoor adventures were the family and friends with whom he kayaked or scuba’d, rock or ice climbed, hiked or skied. Bill arose at 5 am each morning, to pray for people by name. His current prayer list covered over 12 pages.
Bill is survived by his wife, Jan, sons Will (Wendi) and Joe (Mayu), his mother Ann, siblings Jim, Fran, Clint, Robert and their families. He is beloved as family in Indiana, through Wendi; in Japan, through Mayu; in Korea, through the Jangs; and Kenyan sons.
Services for Bill will be held on Saturday, 10 a.m., at New Creation Church, 44761 US-6, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601. If you can’t join us at the service, NCC will offer a live-stream at newcreationchurch.org Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BillBevinsMemorial/
